II. COUNTRY SHANE'S FACT

How are you doing, everybody. This is Country Shane and I'm here to bring you the facts. You all have heard of Google Glass. Well, they're not really glasses 'cuz they have no lenses and the monitor is only for the right eye. And they're only one size. So for a pumpkin head like me, Google Glass is out.

III. Q&A

1) UNDEVELOPED vs UNDERDEVELOPED

- null: vô giá trị, vô dụng (has no value, zero)
Ví dụ: This contract is null and void

4) HOW TO SAY: Could I have a box of Jujyfruits?

Trong câu này chúng ta có nối âm và lược bỏ âm.
Từ "have" khi nó đứng ở giữa câu, rất có thể âm 'h' sẽ bị lược bỏ.
Âm 'v' trong từ "of" cũng bị lược bỏ.

5) vowel sounds in the word ALTAR /awter/

IV. ABOUT DDM

TRANSCRIPT
Last week, we studied lock, luck and look. And several of you asked me about lack. Well, that sound is different, too. (LACK) What does to lack something means? It means to be short of something, to not be complete, to be missing something. So for example, uh yes, I am lacking some hair. But I’m ok. Uh, if you look at my bank book. I’m lacking some money. It’s not enough. But, it’s ok. Regarding my computer and my camera, I’m not lacking. I have a good computer. I have a good camera. So I can make videos. Regarding YouTube subscribers, I’m not lacking. We almost have altogether 15000 subscribers. Isn’t that amazing? We only get a thousand here, but on the other chanels. So I’m not lacking subscribers. Thank you very much. Are you lacking anything? Are you lacking some money? Are you lacking some good look? Are you lacking some charm? Are you lacking some hair? Listen to the dialogue.
A: Any advice? How do I get more YouTube viewers?
B: Well... you are lacking something.
A: What? Energy?
B: Hair. You might want to get a toupee.
Are you serious? It’s the reason I’m lacking YouTube subscribers is it because I’m lacking hair? Really? Oh... oh no. In the future, I will only wear hat. Sorry now, do I have a hat? Yes. From now on, I will teach like this. And you will not know that I’m lacking any hair. See you tomorrow.

ECUBED #46: to turn in

Good morning, everyone. Xin chào buổi sáng. Bài học Ecubed hôm nay giới thiệu cách sử dụng cụm động từ "to turn in".

TRANSCRIPT
Hey everybody. Welcome back to E-cubed. As I promised yesterday, today I will focus on the phrasal verb “to turn in”. Now, to turn in can have several meanings. I’m going to focus on two.
Number 1, to turn in something. To turn in something means to give something to somebody who asked for it. And the easy example is homework. Turn in your homework to the professor. Turn in a proposal to the boss. So, when you give something to a teacher, or to a boss. Basically, those are the two main situations. You turn something in. They asked for something. You did it and then you turn it in. Okay? We can use it in other situations, too. For example, the police have asked the public to turn in their weapons, to turn in drugs. To give something to somebody. That’s the idea.
Another definition of “to turn in” means to go to bed. What time did you turn in last night? What time did you go to bed last night? So those are two very common definitions of the phrasal verb “to turn in”. Okay? Listen to the dialogue.
A: Did you turn in the assignment?
B: Yes! Now I’m free.
A: So, what are you gonna do?
B: I’m gonna turn in early tonight. I’m tired.
That would be nice to turn in early. What time do you usually turn in? Leave a message down below and I’ll see you guys tomorrow. Bye bye.
CHÚ Ý Trong bài học này chúng ta cần chú ý tới 2 định nghĩa phổ biến của cụm động từ “to turn in”.
1. “to turn in something” có nghĩa là nộp cho ai đó, đưa cho ai đó những thứ mà họ yêu cầu. Tình huống thông dụng là giáo viên giao bài tập về nhà, sinh viên làm xong bài tập thì mang đi nộp bài (turn in).
2. “to turn in” cũng có nghĩa là đi ngủ (= go to bed)

ECUBED #45: to come in on ~

Good morning, everybody. Chào buổi sáng! Bài học Ecubed hôm nay sẽ giới thiệu tới các bạn cách sử dụng cụm từ "to come in on ~". Chúc các bạn buổi sáng tốt lành!

TRANSCRIPT
Hey everybody. Welcome back to Ecubed. In one of last week’s dialogues. We had the expression “come in on the weekend”. And, somebody asked is it the same as turn in? No. Tomorrow, I will teach you “turn in”. But come in, let’s focus on “come in on”. So, the verb (come in), it’s a phrasal verb, to come in. And when we say on, it refers to a specific day. Okay? So it has to be a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or weekday, or weekend.
Come in on a weekday.
Come in on a weekend.
Come in on a Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun.
So I’ll show you something cool. Yeah! Chinese characters. Chinese characters. Sorry.
To come in on a specific day. Come in on December, no. Come in on 3 o’clock, no. Come in on the fourth. It’s possible. We can use numbers. Come in on the 4th, Come in on the 10th, so we can use numbers, too. Okay? Remember that.
So, when you’re setting an appointment. You need to see a doctor. You need to go some place. They will say, can you come in on a Monday? Can you come in on Tuesday? And then you can set your appointment. Okay? Listen to the dialogue.
A: Can you come in on a weekend?
B: No. I can only go in on weekdays.
A: Can you come in on Friday?
B: No, I’m Muslim. That’s my weekend. Sunday?
No. I’m not Muslim. But I do have a lot of Muslim friends. A lot of you are Muslim. And I think Jewish people are the same. And maybe even some Christian, I know STA.. I’m not exactly sure. But the weekend is actually different for them. I believe for some is Thusday, Friday, for some is Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is a working day. So, I live in South Korea which is not a Muslim country, and the weekend is Saturday and Sunday. So it can be confusing. Anyway, come in, come in, come to the office, come to visit, come for an appointment on a day... Remember that. I’ll see you tomorrow.

ECUBED #44: A pain in the neck

Chào buổi sáng! Xin chào mọi người! Hôm nay Coach Shane sẽ giới thiệu cho chúng ta thành ngữ "a pain in the neck" - cục tức ở cổ.

TRANSCRIPT
Hello everybody. Welcome back to Ecubed. Today we have a fun expression. It is to be a pain in the neck. So somebody is a pain in the neck. Or something is a pain in the neck. So we could say, Shane is a pain in the neck. A pain would be an ache, something that hurts. I have a pain right here. An ache, some sort of bad feeling. A pain in the neck. Now, this is the neck. Well, this is the neck but usually we say throat. So when we say a pain in the neck, we don’t think here (throat), we think here or here.
What is a pain in the neck? Something that is anoying, something that makes us mad. And watch (Oh, oh man... Oh man. That guy, Shane. Oh...He’s a pain in the neck. I hate him. Oh, he causes so many problems. He gives me stress. English, English, English. Oh, Shane, Coach Shane is a pain in the neck.) Do you have anything in your life that is a pain in the neck? Maybe your little brother, maybe public transportation. Listen to the dialogue.
A: Oh, this traffic is such a pain in the neck.
B: Well, it’s Friday night. It’s always bad.
A: Next time, let’s take the subway or bus.
B: Oh, but standing on the bus is such a pain in the neck, too!
Not too difficult. Quicky about pronunciation. A pain in the neck. But if we say this (in the) really fast, it almost sounds like in nuh, keep two ‘n’. In nuh. A pain in nuh neck. A pain in nuh neck. Oh, oh man, English is a pain in the neck. See you tomorrow.
CHÚ Ý “a pain in the neck” là một thành ngữ chỉ người hoặc vật gì đó gây phiền toái, là cái của nợ.

ECUBED #43: Steal my thunder

TRANSCRIPT
Hello everybody. Welcome to Ecubed. Today we’ve got a great expression, to steal someone’s thunder. Well, you know what to steal means, to take something, to burgle something, to be a thief. Okay? But, what about thunder? Thunder is that noise in the sky, and then there’s a lighting, and then there’s a rain or even snow. So, to steal someone’s thunder means to steal their big day, their big moment. So, if I have a very important day, or a very important moment or event. And then someone else comes, and takes the glory, takes the spotlight, becomes the star, tries to become the prince, or the princess, or the king, or the queen. They are stealing my thunder.
So for example. It’s my birthday, and I’m having a party. But one of the guests, he says, today I got a promotion and I will pay for everything. So everybody says congratulations, congratulations to him. It’s my birthday. It’s my day. It’s not your day. Don’t steal my thunder. He’s stealing my thunder. He’s stealing my day, my moment. He’s a bad guy. Do you know anybody that has stolen your thunder? Who? Who? Listen to the dialogue.
A: Aren’t you inviting Amanda to the wedding?
B: No way. She always tries to steal my thunder.
A: How. Because she always tries to be the queen?
B: That’s right. That’s my day and I’m not gonna let anyone steal my thunder.
That’s right. Amanda is a bad woman and she will not be invited to the wedding because she will try to steal the thunder, try to look more pretty, try to wear a nice dress, being so nice and ladylike. Get out of here, Amanda. We don’t like you, Amanda because you try to steal everybody else’s thunder. Don’t steal someone else’s thunder. Control yourself. That’s today’s Ecubed and I will see you again tomorrow. Practice.

ECUBED #42: Go down...

TRANSCRIPT
“...Hello everybody. Welcome back to Ecubed. Now, yesterday we had a phrasal verb “to come down with”. Correct? Well, actually It was interesting. The word down, the preposition down is very common in phrasal verb, and it does have a meaning. So today, we’re going to look at the phrasal verb “to go down”.
Now, actually to go down can have several meanings. But, I’m going to mean actual going, actual movement down. And when we say down, down can mean basically three things.
It can mean to the south. Because we say north, west, east, south. South is down. So it can mean to go south.
It can mean to go down the hill, or down the elevator. So, actually going up and going down, and it can physically mean going down. Okay?
And what’s the third meaning? It means... Ahh, I’ll give you two more meanings. One is downtown, to go down with the nuance of downtown. I’m going down to the bar tonight. And that means out of the neighbourhood, into the urban area. I’m going down to the store, out of the housing area and to the store. If you had ever been to America. You should see that we have very large housing areas with no stores. So you need to have a car, or a bicycle to go to the store. So it’s not just a store, and a bakery, and a gas station, and maybe a movie theater, and some shops. So that area is the urban area. It might be downtown. So I’m going down to the store that means that urban area. Okay?
And another nuance of down is down the hall. So, if you’re in a hallway. You alway down the hall to the other end of the hall. That’s another usage. So down the hall, it means the opposite end of the hall. Okay?
So down does have meaning. Listen to this dialog.
A: Are you going down to the store today?
B: I went down yesterday.
A: Please? I need some more beer!
B: Go get it yourself.
That’s a very common expression. Down to the store. And if you need something, go yourself. Why don’t you tell your mother, “mom, I’m going down to the store. Can I get anything for you?” “Yes. Give me some milk, and some eggs, and some flour, and some...” Well, you might have a big trip, so becareful. Your mom might ask you to buy many things. Or maybe she’ll ask to go with you. Is that good or bad? If my mom want to go to the store with me, go down to the store with me, I’d be happy. To go down. Remember, there are meanings. Take care, and I’ll see you tomorrow....
Ví dụ như xuống đồi (down the hill), xuống thang máy (down the elevator),...
“To go down” cũng có thể mang sắc thái nghĩa giống như “to go downtown” (đi vào trung tâm thành phố).
Ví dụ: “I’m going down to the bar tonight” có nghĩa là đi ra khỏi khu vực nhà ở dân cư để vào khu đô thị (khu vực tập trung buôn bán, dịch vụ,...)
“Down” cũng mang một sắc thái nghĩa khác là “down the hall”. Nếu bạn đang phía đầu này của một hành lang, và bạn muốn đi tới đầu bên kia hành lang thì bạn có thể nói “go down the hall”.
