LME Podcast 40: Chocolate Cake EVERY DAY!

Welcome to LME Podcast number 40. Have a good time listening to this podcast, everyone!!!

Chocolate Cake EVERY DAY!!

Having a hard time getting your kids to eat their veggies? Maybe you don’t want to eat your veggies. If only you could eat chocolate cake every day… Your prayers have been answered! A new fork has been developed that will trick your mind into thinking it’s eating chocolate ice cream when it’s actually eating broccoli. How? Aromas! The fork is designed to give off a wide variety of aromas while you eat—those smells override your sense of taste. Go vegan—but taste steak!

Veggies: vegetables = rau
Developed: invented = phát triển, phát minh ra
Trick: manipulate, fool = đánh lừa
Aromas: smells, odors… usually of food = mùi hương, hương thơm
Give off: emit… delivers a smell = phát ra, tỏa ra (mùi gì đó)
Override: are more powerful than, take control over = đè lên, át đi
Vegan: “completely vegetarian” (no eggs, no milk, no real ice cream!)

Country Shane's FACTS!

There are only five tastes that we can taste! Sweetness, sourness, saltiness, bitterness and umami! But the nose knows a trillion smells! A trillion!!

LME Podcast 39: Squeegee Men

Welcome to LME Podcast number 39. Have a good time listening to this podcast, everyone!!!

Squeegee Men

Better have a buck handy if you get caught at a red light in the Big Apple—the squeegee men are back. Armed with a bottle of Windex and a crumpled up newspaper, these men walk up to your car and clean your windshield—whether it’s dirty or not. The vagrants were a big problem in the 80s and 90s but were run out of business as a part of New York’s “broken windows theory” policies. But they’re back—and people don’t like it.

A buck: một đô la
Handy: thuận tiện, tiện tay
Caught at a red light: dừng lại ở nơi đèn đỏ
The Big Apple: thành phố New York (NYC)
Crumple up the newspaper: vò nhàu một tờ báo
Windshield: kính chắn gió xe ô tô
Vagrants: người lang thang
Run out of business: ngưng hoạt động, phá sản

Country Shane's FACTS!

Some teens use Windex on their zits! Don’t do it!! Windex is serious stuff and can eat through plastic! It is NOT something you want on your skin—especially in your eyes.

(Click to show transcript.)

Ecubed #49: KICK IT UP A NOTCH

Welcome to E-cubed!!! Chúng ta hãy cùng khám phá một EXPRESSION mới trong bài học hôm nay nhé. Expression đó là KICK IT UP A NOTCH.

TRANSCRIPT (by Quoc Viet Ha)

Hey everybody, Welcome back to E3. Today's expression is pretty cool. It is to kick it up a notch. Now, this has a phrasal verb to kick up and to kick up, to kick up uh...uh… Here's my foot. To kick up, OK? So what does to kick up means? Of course it means to kick up... uh... But also, it means to increase, to increase the intensity, to increase the heat, to increase the volume, to increase the energy. So, if I'm teaching a class and I'm teaching like this, I might need to kick it up, I might need to kick up the energy, kick up the enthusiasm, kick up the power, kick up the passion. To kick something up is to increase. Do you understand? So it can refer to many difference things.

Now, a notch actually refers to one space. So, think about an audio stereo. OK. On the stereo, you have a volume, and this is like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Correct? And the volume is at right here, the volume is at 2. Is this loud? No, it's not too loud. So we kick it up a notch, it means kick it up to 3. So this would be 1 notch. And if you feel the volume, sometimes you can feel tup, you can feel like it goes into a notch. A notch is actually a hole. Tup. To kick it up a notch, so ruh pup to 3, ruh pup to 4, ruh pup to 5. So Kick it up a notch kick it up a little. That's the idea. Listen to the dialog and hopefully you can understand.

Oh it's pretty cool in here.
The thermostat's at 24.
Can we kick it up a notch?
Okay. Ooh! That's my favorite song!
Me, too! Let's kick that up a notch, too.

Isn't that a great song? And who is that singer? We need listen again and kick it up 3 notches. Kick it up all the way. Maximum volume. Maybe not. It's not that good.

That's today expression E3. And we will back again tomorrow. See ya.

GHI CHÚ BÀI HỌC

To kick it up a notch = tăng âm lượng lên một nấc
